The most common species of tourmaline is schorl the sodium iron endmember of the group. Schorl is found in pegmatites. When dutch travelers to the indies brought back the first tourmaline stones to europe in 1703 they brought the original name turamali from the singhalese sri lanka. Schorl derives its name from the old mining term for black tourmaline found in a tin mine in a german village near the western ore mountains called zschorlau. It may account for 95 or more of all tourmaline in nature.
Schorl may also be dark bluish black and dark greenish black. The early history of the mineral schorl shows that the name schorl was in use prior to 1400 because a village known today as zschorlau in saxony germany was then named schorl or minor variants of this name and the village had a nearby tin mine where in addition to cassiterite black. Schorl is the black variety of tourmaline. The opaque prismatic crystals may be several metres in length. Schorl is the most common mineral in the tourmaline group that also includes buergerite dravite elbaite and uvite.
It may form in tiny dense needles within a quartz crystal where it is known as tourmalinated quartz. The color becomes black due to the influence of iron. Schorl is the black iron rich form of tourmaline and is very common. During the victorian era black tourmaline was widely used for mourning jewellery but today it has little if any value as a gemstone. It is colored black by the presence of iron.
